Surface Treatment Stages
Surface treatments being one of the most important steps when it comes to metal finishing. The treatments, depending on the type of metals, could differ significantly and often very specific to the corresponding materials. During the developing stage of a product, finding the right finishing method can be tricky and takes many experiments to make the final decision. Some of our products needs to go through three stages of different surface treatments in order to fulfill both the aesthetic and functional needs.
The stainless steel made W Tray is made from 1.5mm thick 304 stainless steel plate. Once the form is decided, we test each prototype with several finishing methods to understand the visual effects and the durability of the finishings.
The first stage of our W Tray surface treatment is hand polishing. Experienced craftsmen hand polish every single piece to remove uneven materials and make sure the piece is clean for the next finishing stage. Later we send the pieces to a sandblasting studio to give the stainless steel surface a rough and sandy texture. Sandblasting further removes scratches or bump that might happened during the manufacturing as well as creating an interesting feel to the surface of the pieces. Finally, the pieces go through a series of electric reactions called electropolishing, which help bring back the natural shine and reflection of what a stainless steel would look like. This treatment bites off a thin layer from the top of the surface, giving the rough surface from previous sandblasting treatment a brighter look. It also gives the stainless steel a quality of easy-cleaning. Without the electropolishing, finger prints, or dirt can very easily attach to the stainless steel surface.
Tips on cleaning the W Tray :
Wipe clean with light soup, dry with clean cloth and enjoy the new shine.
